What you find in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen grew around Fifth Avenue, a pedestrian street running parallel to the sea, lined with shops, restaurants and bars open late. On either side sit Playacar, with its large hotels and golf course, and the apartment districts where people staying for weeks tend to base themselves. The ferries to Cozumel leave from the downtown pier, so some of the people booking this transfer are really heading to the island.

The result is a very mixed arrival hall: families on all-inclusive packages, divers on their way to Cozumel, groups of friends, and people coming to work for a few months out of a rented apartment. Drop-off points are spread widely between downtown, Playacar and the northern hotel strip, which is why we ask for the exact name of your accommodation rather than settling for the town.

Against the shared van and bus

There is a direct bus from the airport to the Playa del Carmen station, and shared vans run down Federal Highway 307 stopping along the way. Both leave you downtown rather than at your hotel, and from there you still need another taxi, with your bags in hand and whatever fare you are quoted at that moment. If you are staying in Playacar or on the northern strip, that last leg eats much of the saving.

A private transfer is paid once, $69.99 USD one way for 1 to 8 passengers and $139.98 USD round trip, and it ends at the door of your accommodation. The price does not move with the number of passengers or bags, so the bigger the group the less it works out per head. And nobody waits for a shared vehicle to fill up before leaving the terminal, which on a busy afternoon is a wait of its own.

Heading back from Playa del Carmen

Fifth Avenue is pedestrian, so no vehicle can reach the door of the hotels that face it: the pick-up happens on the nearest cross street or at the service entrance, and the driver tells you the exact spot when confirming. In Playacar and in the apartment buildings we do drive up to the entrance, though several condominiums need the tower number and the name the booking is under.

The pick-up time is worked backwards from your flight, counting the run up Highway 307 and check-in at the terminal. That matters most for afternoon departures, when the stretch into Cancun fills with traffic and the margin disappears on its own. If you booked a round trip we confirm the hour the day before; if you only booked the outbound leg, the return can be added later.

Frequently asked questions

What is worth knowing before you book

How much is a taxi from Cancun to Playa del Carmen?

The fixed price is $69.99 USD one way for 1 to 8 passengers, and $139.98 USD round trip. It is the price of the whole vehicle: there is no per-person or per-bag charge, and tolls and taxes are already included. It is closed before you book, so traffic on Highway 307 and your landing time do not change it.

What does the transfer include?

A private air-conditioned vehicle for your group alone, a bilingual driver, flight tracking and a meet and greet inside the terminal with a sign bearing your name. Also tolls and taxes, luggage with no per-bag charge, and child seats. If the flight is late the waiting is not charged: we move the pick-up ourselves.

Can I pay in US dollars?

Yes. We take dollars and pesos in cash, and card and PayPal too, with no surcharge for the payment method. If you plan to pay cash, tell us when you book so the driver brings change. And if you would rather settle it before flying, card or PayPal is paid at booking and you arrive without reaching for your wallet.

Do you do the return to the airport?

Yes. When you book a round trip we work the pick-up time backwards from your departing flight, allowing for the run up Highway 307 and check-in at the terminal, and confirm it the day before along with the pick-up point. The round trip is $139.98 USD and works out better than two separate one-way rides.

How long does the airport to Playa del Carmen take?

It is about 68 kilometres along Federal Highway 307, between 50 and 70 minutes depending on traffic and what time you land. The run is direct, with no stops and nobody else to collect on the way, and it ends at the entrance of your hotel or apartment, not at a nearby point you then walk from.

Is the airport bus to Playa del Carmen worth it?

It depends where you are staying and how many of you there are. The bus drops you at the downtown station and from there you need a taxi with your luggage. The private transfer is $69.99 USD for the whole vehicle, door to door, with no second leg and no waiting around.

Can you drop me at a hotel on Fifth Avenue?

Yes. Fifth Avenue is pedestrian, so the vehicle reaches the cross street nearest your hotel entrance and it is a few metres on foot from there, with the driver helping with the bags. In Playacar and the condominiums we do drive right up to the entrance.

Can you take me to the Cozumel ferry?

Yes. The ferry pier is in downtown Playa del Carmen, right by Fifth Avenue, and we can drop you there instead of at a hotel. Say so when you book, so the driver plans the drop-off point closest to the ferry terminal and you do not cross town with your bags.

Can I get an Uber from the airport?

No. Uber cannot pick up inside Cancun Airport: the airport's ground transport concession belongs to the authorised taxis, and taking an Uber would mean walking out of the grounds to the highway, which makes no sense with luggage. In Playa del Carmen it operates in a limited way, and at many hotels it cannot come in to collect, because of friction with the local taxi drivers.

Where is the official taxi rank at the airport?

As you come out of arrivals you will find the Caribbean Taxi desks, the company that holds the airport concession: you follow the yellow signs and pay the zone fare there. It is a legitimate option, but it means queuing with your bags at the end of a flight and not knowing the amount until that moment. What is not worth doing is taking up an offer from anyone approaching you at the exit with no uniform and no desk. Booking ahead skips the queue: the price is fixed and the driver waits with a sign in your name.

Where exactly do you drop us?

Playa del Carmen is Quinta Avenida and the centre, Playacar to the south, the northern hotel strip, and the apartments and rental houses spread through the town's streets. Playacar is entered through a gatehouse and the rentals by exact address: that is why it helps to give it when you book. Give us the address or the name of your accommodation when you book and the driver takes you to the door.

The difference

The three questions we are always asked

Why private instead of a shared shuttle?

A shared shuttle makes several stops before yours: 45 to 90 extra minutes after a long flight. Here the vehicle leaves with you and does not stop until your hotel.

Are you allowed inside the airport?

Yes. We hold an official permit to operate inside CUN and TQO, which is why we can meet you inside the terminal with your name on a sign instead of arranging to meet outside.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight number you give us and move the pick-up ourselves. The waiting is not charged: the delay is not your fault.
