The town, the pier and the reef
Puerto Morelos still has its main square a few steps from the sea, with the pier and the leaning lighthouse that was left tilted by a hurricane and ended up as the symbol of the town. Offshore runs the barrier protected as the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, and that is where the place makes its living: snorkelling, diving and fishing boats working most of the year.
It is slow-paced next to Cancun or Playa del Carmen: you walk, you eat fish by the pier and you go to bed early. It draws couples who want a beach without noise, families with small children, and divers who come for the reef. It is also the base for people on a short trip who do not want to spend half a day driving down and half a day driving back.
Two Puerto Morelos, not one
The name covers two separate areas. The seaward one is the old town, with the square, the pier and the small beach hotels. The other sits by Federal Highway 307, where the Joaquín Zetina Gasca neighbourhood and the big resorts of that stretch are. A straight road joins them, but it is not a distance you cover on foot with the luggage from a long flight.
So when booking it helps to be clear which is yours: a place on the highway stretch and a place by the pier are not the same spot even though they share a town name. It makes no difference at all to the price, because both sides fall within the same zone: $49.99 USD one way for 1 to 8 passengers and $99.98 USD round trip, whichever of the two we take you to.
The quickest destination from the terminal
Half an hour of road changes how you plan the whole trip. With a flight that lands late, Puerto Morelos is one of the few coastal destinations you reach without losing the entire night to the highway, and with an early departure the pick-up does not force you out of bed in the middle of the night the way Akumal or Tulum would, where an hour or more of driving has to be counted before check-in.
It also makes it practical for short stays and for anyone with a long layover or a single night before moving on. Being close changes nothing else: the meet and greet is still inside the terminal with a sign bearing your name, waiting time is still free if the flight is delayed, and the price is still fixed before you book, tolls and taxes included.
