Where we drop you in Akumal

Akumal is reached along Federal Highway 307, a little over an hour and a half from Cancun Airport. It is a place of quiet bays, and many places to stay are down internal roads where the shared van does not go: which is exactly where a direct transfer shows its worth.

What Akumal is and who goes

Akumal is a shallow bay between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, known for the sea turtles that feed on the seagrass beds. It is not a resort town with nightlife or a shopping avenue: it is a run of quiet bays, condominiums and small hotels spread between the beach and Federal Highway 307, with the Yal-Ku lagoon at the northern end of the inlet and cenotes a short way inland.

That draws a fairly specific traveller: families renting a condominium with a kitchen for a week or two, divers, and people after somewhere quiet near the cenotes. Stays here tend to be long and the luggage heavy, and arriving straight from the terminal in your own vehicle avoids the changes and transfers with suitcases that any shared option imposes at the end of a long flight.

A shopping stop before you arrive

Many places to stay in Akumal are condominiums and villas with kitchens, and the shops within the area are limited compared with Playa del Carmen, which happens to sit on the way down from the airport. Since the vehicle is yours for the whole journey, a stop at a supermarket before arriving can be agreed in advance instead of having to sort it out the next day with no car.

It is worth mentioning when you book so the driver allows for that time within the run. It is a practical difference from the shared van or the bus, neither of which stops for anybody along the way: arriving with the groceries already done saves the first taxi of the holiday, and in an area with no taxi rank around the corner that is not always quick to arrange.

Inner roads and the trip back

North Akumal, Half Moon Bay and Aventuras Akumal are reached by internal roads off Highway 307 that are not always signposted from the carriageway. Public transport drops you at the junction, on the edge of the highway, and from there to your door is a stretch that is not short with suitcases in the heat. Our drivers go all the way in, to the hotel, the condominium or the villa.

For the return it pays to settle it from the start. Akumal has no taxi ranks on every corner as Playa del Carmen does, and finding a vehicle at the last minute for a morning flight can get complicated. With the round trip, $219.98 USD against $109.99 USD one way, the pick-up hour is worked out from your departing flight and confirmed the day before.

Frequently asked questions

What is worth knowing before you book

How much is the transfer from Cancun to Akumal?

$109.99 USD one way for up to 8 passengers and $219.98 USD round trip, with the whole vehicle for your group. There is no charge per person or per bag, and tolls and taxes are already in the price. It is closed before you book, so it does not change if traffic on Highway 307 stretches the run or your flight lands later than planned.

How long does the airport to Akumal take?

Around one hour forty minutes on Federal Highway 307, past Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, and depending on traffic. To that you add the last stretch along the internal bay roads, short but slow, which shared transport does not drive: we go all the way to the door. Landing at rush hour adds time to the run, but not to the price, which is fixed beforehand.

Can I pay by card?

Yes, by card, with PayPal, or in cash in pesos or dollars, with no surcharge for the payment method. Card and PayPal are paid at booking, so you arrive with it settled; cash is paid on the day, and it helps to tell us at booking so the driver brings change. The published price is the same in all three cases.

What does the Akumal transfer include?

A private air-conditioned vehicle for your group alone, a bilingual driver, flight tracking and a meet and greet inside the terminal with a sign bearing your name. It covers tolls, taxes, luggage with no per-bag charge and child seats. If your plane is delayed, we wait and the waiting is not charged.

Do we all fit in one vehicle?

The $109.99 USD price covers 1 to 8 passengers in the same vehicle, so most families and small groups travel together without paying more. If there are more than eight of you, or you bring diving or snorkelling gear on top of the luggage, say so when booking and we adjust the vehicle before closing the price.

Can we stop at a supermarket before reaching Akumal?

Yes. Many places to stay in Akumal are condominiums with kitchens, and that stop is usually made in Playa del Carmen, which is on the way. Mention it when you book so the driver allows for the time within the run instead of improvising it.

Do you go into North Akumal and Half Moon Bay?

Yes. Those areas are reached by internal roads off Highway 307 that are not always signposted, and shared transport leaves you at the junction. We drive all the way to the door of the hotel, condominium or villa at no extra charge.

How do I get back to the airport from Akumal?

The simplest thing is to book it from the start, because Akumal has no taxi ranks on every corner and early in the morning a vehicle can be hard to find. The round trip is $219.98 USD, and the hour is worked out from your departing flight and confirmed the day before.

Can I get an Uber from the airport?

No. Uber cannot pick up inside Cancun Airport: the airport's ground transport concession belongs to the authorised taxis, and taking an Uber would mean walking out of the grounds to the highway, which makes no sense with luggage. And beyond Cancun and Playa del Carmen the service is patchy where it exists at all, so counting on it for a transfer with luggage and a time to keep is a gamble.

Where is the official taxi rank at the airport?

As you come out of arrivals you will find the Caribbean Taxi desks, the company that holds the airport concession: you follow the yellow signs and pay the zone fare there. It is a legitimate option, but it means queuing with your bags at the end of a flight and not knowing the amount until that moment. What is not worth doing is taking up an offer from anyone approaching you at the exit with no uniform and no desk. Booking ahead skips the queue: the price is fixed and the driver waits with a sign in your name.

Where exactly do you drop us?

Akumal is not a town with a main street: it is the bay, Akumal Norte and Half Moon Bay, Aventuras Akumal, and the villas and condos scattered between the beach and the 307. All of them are reached down inner roads off the highway that shared transport does not drive; we go all the way to the door. Give us the address or the name of your accommodation when you book and the driver takes you to the door.

How it works

From the plane to the hotel, without a single queue

What actually happens from the moment the aircraft doors open.

1
Official meeting point inside the terminal

You book and the confirmation arrives

Pick your destination and vehicle, and within minutes your confirmation is in your inbox with the exact meeting point.

2
Uniformed and identified Smile & Go staff

We wait for you inside the terminal

A uniformed representative waits as you clear customs, holding a sign with your name. Nobody to look for, no stepping outside to haggle.

3
Direct arrival at the hotel entrance

Straight to your hotel door

No stops, nobody else to collect, no detours. You arrive at your hotel entrance, not at a nearby point.

The difference

The three questions we are always asked

Why private instead of a shared shuttle?

A shared shuttle makes several stops before yours: 45 to 90 extra minutes after a long flight. Here the vehicle leaves with you and does not stop until your hotel.

Are you allowed inside the airport?

Yes. We hold an official permit to operate inside CUN and TQO, which is why we can meet you inside the terminal with your name on a sign instead of arranging to meet outside.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight number you give us and move the pick-up ourselves. The waiting is not charged: the delay is not your fault.
