The lagoon and the town of Bacalar
Bacalar is a small town looking out over a freshwater lagoon whose bed makes the water read as several different blues depending on the hour and the depth. The San Felipe fort stands above the town facing the water, and along the shore there are piers, swimming spots and the places to stay that open straight onto the lagoon. The town itself is small enough to walk end to end.
What people do here belongs to fresh water, not the sea: boat trips around the Canal de los Piratas, kayaking first thing in the morning, cenotes at the water edge and not much more. Those who book this transfer usually come to stay several days, often pairing Bacalar with the southern coast, and prefer to arrive in one go, without changes or waiting around with their luggage.
Why go private on a long route
Almost everyone searching for this route compares three options: the bus, a rental car or a private transfer. The bus drops you at a terminal and from there you still have to sort out another ride with your luggage; the rental car means driving south the moment you step off the plane and dealing with deposits and insurance at the counter. Neither is much of a plan straight after a long flight.
The private transfer runs from the airport to your door with the vehicle price closed before you book. It is the whole vehicle, for 1 to 8 passengers, so in a group the split changes the arithmetic quite a lot. Nobody else gets in along the way, tolls and taxes are inside the price, and you get to sleep or watch the road instead of driving it yourself at the end of a long flight.
Arrival, the address and the return
Many places to stay in Bacalar are outside the centre, spread along the lagoon shore road, and they do not always have a sign that is visible from the road. Write the full address and a nearby landmark when booking: that is what saves you circling at the end of a long journey. If your place is hard to reach, better to say so beforehand than to find out on arrival.
For the return, the round trip is booked in one go and the driver collects you at the time you agree, at the same closed price as the outbound leg. Choose a time with enough margin for your flight, and tell us if you change accommodation during your stay so that the pickup happens at the right place. Letting us know in good time avoids surprises on departure day.
