The seafront, the reef and the village
Mahahual is a village built along a single line of coast: a pedestrian seafront with the reef in front of it, small places to stay, restaurants almost on the sand, and a newer area, Nuevo Mahahual, set slightly apart from the seafront. Boats to Banco Chinchorro leave from here, and to the south the coast road carries on towards Xcalak, near the southern edge of the state.
People come for exactly that: reef close to the shore, a quiet village and a coastline that looks nothing like the north of the state. The trade-off is the distance, which is why travellers who book this transfer usually have several days ahead of them and prefer to settle the arrival in one move, with no changes and no driving. Arriving rested counts on a route this long.
If your destination is the cruise pier
Just outside the village lies the Costa Maya cruise pier, and it is not the same thing as the seafront: they are two different points, and it is worth saying which one is your destination when you book. The port area has its own access rules, so the sooner we know you are heading there, the better the arrival or pickup can be organised, and the less room there is for confusion on the day.
This matters most if you are boarding a ship, or arriving on one and wanting to move around independently. In those cases timing is what counts: give the boarding time or the ship arrival time when you book, and leave margin. The transfer price does not change with the exact point inside Mahahual, but the planning does. What matters is having it in writing before you travel.
How the run south works
The vehicle is private and travels with your group only: it leaves when you land and does not detour to collect other passengers, which is worth more on a journey this long than on a short one. The driver waits for you inside the terminal with a sign showing your name, tracks your flight and charges nothing for waiting if the plane is late. Nobody else gets into the vehicle along the way.
Luggage carries no extra charge, and neither does snorkelling or diving gear, but mention it when you book so the vehicle assigned has room for it. You pay by card or PayPal when booking, or in cash to the driver, in pesos or dollars. The return to the airport is arranged in one go with the round trip; if you fly out after a boat trip, leave margin when you choose the pickup time.
