Where we drop you in Tulum Downtown

Downtown Tulum is the town that grew along both sides of federal highway 307, with Avenida Tulum as its main street and neighbourhoods such as La Veleta and Aldea Zama spreading inland. It is a different place from the beach hotel zone, which runs along the shore and has its own page and its own, higher fare. The town is where most of the apartments, hostels and restaurants are, along with the bus station and the bike and scooter rentals.

  • Avenida Tulum, the main street of the town
  • The La Veleta and Aldea Zama neighbourhoods
  • The bus station area
  • The apartments and hostels downtown
  • The junction toward the archaeological site and the beach
  • The lodgings along Avenida Coba

Two Tulums: the town and the beach

Tulum splits into two areas that look nothing alike. The town sits on highway 307, with a regular street grid, supermarkets, pharmacies, markets and a huge supply of apartments, hostels and restaurants at mainland prices. The hotel zone, by contrast, is a narrow road beside the sea lined with beach hotels and another scale of prices; getting out there costs more and has its own page.

It is worth knowing which of the two is your destination before booking, because the fare is not the same and neither is the drop off point. If your accommodation confirmation mentions Avenida Tulum, Avenida Coba, La Veleta or Aldea Zama, you are in the town and this is your page. If it mentions the Tulum to Boca Paila road or the coastal strip, your transfer is the hotel zone one.

The 307 and night arrivals

The trip runs along federal highway 307, the same road that comes down from Cancun through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal, and enters Tulum as the main avenue of the town. It is a long run compared with the Cancun destinations, so the vehicle carries your group alone with no stops to pick anyone else up, and the tolls and taxes along the way are already inside the price you saw when booking.

A good share of the flights serving Tulum land in the late afternoon or at night, and then the 307 is driven in the dark. We track your flight with the number you give us, so the driver is waiting inside the terminal even if you land late, and the wait is not charged. We also operate from Tulum Airport, in case your flight arrives there instead of in Cancun.

Long stays, shopping and the return

Long apartment stays are common in the town, and with them comes one very frequent request: a shopping stop before arriving. It can be done, and asking for it when you book works better than improvising on the road, because the driver plans for it. The same goes for bulky luggage: boards, folding bikes or diving gear all fit if you tell us, because with that detail we assign a vehicle of the right size.

For the way back, a round trip saves you from depending on whatever is available on departure day, which in Tulum varies a lot with the season. We agree the pickup time from your flight and the driver comes to the address you gave us. If your place is on an inner street in La Veleta or Aldea Zama, add a visible landmark when booking: not every street there is signposted.

Frequently asked questions

What is worth knowing before you book

How much is the transfer from Cancun Airport to Tulum downtown?

The private transfer to Tulum town is $134.99 USD per vehicle one way and $269.98 USD round trip, for groups of 1 to 8 passengers. The price is closed and covers tolls, taxes, luggage, child seats and the wait if your flight is delayed.

Is this price for the town or the beach hotel zone?

For the town. The Tulum hotel zone, the strip that runs along the sea, is a separate destination, costs more and has its own page. If your confirmation shows the coastal road rather than a street in the town, select that other zone when booking and you will see its fare.

Can you stop at a supermarket on the way to Tulum?

Yes. It is a very common stop for people staying several days in an apartment. Just mention it when booking so the driver plans for it; improvising halfway makes it harder. The vehicle is private and carries your group alone, so nobody else is kept waiting.

Do you also operate from Tulum Airport?

Yes. Besides Cancun Airport we operate from Tulum Airport, with the same private service, flight tracking and meet and greet with a name sign. When booking, choose the correct arrival airport, because the fare depends on where the vehicle starts from.

Do you reach La Veleta or Aldea Zama for the same price?

Yes, those neighbourhoods are part of the town and fall under the same fare. What we ask for is the full address and a visible landmark, because signposting on the inner streets is patchy and phone maps do not always get the right entrance.

What if my flight into Cancun arrives at night?

We operate at any hour and track your flight with the number you give us, so the driver is inside the terminal when you come out even if you land late, and waiting is free. The run down the 307 works the same at night, with a bilingual driver and the price already closed.

Can I get an Uber from the airport?

No. Uber cannot pick up inside Cancun Airport: the airport's ground transport concession belongs to the authorised taxis, and taking an Uber would mean walking out of the grounds to the highway, which makes no sense with luggage. In Tulum it operates, but not everywhere, and even less so out on the beach strip.

Where is the official taxi rank at the airport?

As you come out of arrivals you will find the Caribbean Taxi desks, the company that holds the airport concession: you follow the yellow signs and pay the zone fare there. It is a legitimate option, but it means queuing with your bags at the end of a flight and not knowing the amount until that moment. What is not worth doing is taking up an offer from anyone approaching you at the exit with no uniform and no desk. Booking ahead skips the queue: the price is fixed and the driver waits with a sign in your name.

Where exactly do you drop us?

Downtown Tulum is Avenida Tulum, the La Veleta and Aldea Zamá neighbourhoods, and the area around the bus station. It sits on the 307, so it comes up before the beach hotels, which are out along the coast road. Give us the address or the name of your accommodation when you book and the driver takes you to the door.

How it works

From the plane to the hotel, without a single queue

What actually happens from the moment the aircraft doors open.

1
Official meeting point inside the terminal

You book and the confirmation arrives

Pick your destination and vehicle, and within minutes your confirmation is in your inbox with the exact meeting point.

2
Uniformed and identified Smile & Go staff

We wait for you inside the terminal

A uniformed representative waits as you clear customs, holding a sign with your name. Nobody to look for, no stepping outside to haggle.

3
Direct arrival at the hotel entrance

Straight to your hotel door

No stops, nobody else to collect, no detours. You arrive at your hotel entrance, not at a nearby point.

The difference

The three questions we are always asked

Why private instead of a shared shuttle?

A shared shuttle makes several stops before yours: 45 to 90 extra minutes after a long flight. Here the vehicle leaves with you and does not stop until your hotel.

Are you allowed inside the airport?

Yes. We hold an official permit to operate inside CUN and TQO, which is why we can meet you inside the terminal with your name on a sign instead of arranging to meet outside.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight number you give us and move the pick-up ourselves. The waiting is not charged: the delay is not your fault.
