Chiquila and the island, point by point

Holbox is an island off the northern coast of Quintana Roo, and cars do not cross over to it: you reach it by boat from the port of Chiquila. This private transfer takes you from Cancun International Airport to that port, direct and with no other passengers picked up along the way. The price covers the whole vehicle, is closed before you book and includes tolls and taxes. The boat ticket to the island is bought separately at the pier.

What this transfer actually covers

The service runs from Cancun International Airport to the port of Chiquila, in the north of the state, which is where the boats to the island of Holbox depart from. The vehicle is private, it travels with your group only and picks nobody else up on the way. Your driver waits inside the terminal with a sign showing your name, walks you to the vehicle and handles the luggage.

The car goes as far as the pier, and that is where the transfer ends. It is worth being clear about this when you book, because almost everyone searches for a transfer to Holbox and what you actually book is this road journey to Chiquila. Vehicles do not cross to the island, so from the port you carry on by boat, with a ticket bought separately at the booths in the port itself.

The boat ticket is bought separately

The boat fare is not included in the transfer price. The companies that run the crossing have their ticket booths at the port, and that is where you buy it. Each operator sets its own timetable and frequency, and both can change with the season and with sea conditions, so the sensible thing is to check them on the day you arrive rather than assume them months in advance.

Your driver leaves you with your bags at the pier area, and the luggage is loaded onto the boat with you. On the island there are no cars: from the Holbox pier to your accommodation you walk or take a golf cart. If you travel with large suitcases, your own child seats or bulky gear, factor that last stretch into your plan for arrival day, and pack with it in mind rather than leaving it to chance.

Getting back to the airport from Chiquila

The return leg is arranged by booking a round trip: your driver picks you up at the port of Chiquila at the time you agreed, once you are back from the island. When you choose that time, allow for the boat you plan to take from Holbox and for whatever margin you want before your flight, because this is one of the longer road journeys in the region.

On the way out we track your flight number, so a delayed plane does not leave you without a car and does not mean an extra charge for waiting. What we do not control is the crossing timetable: if you land late in the day, check beforehand how late the boat runs, since it may suit you better to sleep in Chiquila and cross to the island the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is worth knowing before you book

How much does the transfer from Cancun Airport to Holbox cost?

The private transfer to the port of Chiquila costs $254.99 USD one way and $509.98 USD round trip. That is the price of the whole vehicle, for 1 to 8 passengers, with tolls and taxes included. It does not cover the boat fare to the island, which is bought separately at the pier.

Does the transfer go all the way to Holbox island?

No, and it is worth knowing before you book. Vehicles do not cross to the island, so the transfer ends at the pier area in Chiquila and from there you carry on by boat. That is the route everyone takes: by road to the port, and then the crossing, which is run by the boat company.

Is the boat ticket to Holbox included?

No. The crossing is paid for separately, at the ticket booths the boat companies have at the port of Chiquila itself. Timetables, frequency and fares are set by each operator, so it is worth checking them on the day, especially if your flight lands late.

What happens with the luggage when you board the boat?

Your driver leaves you with your bags at the pier area and the luggage travels on the boat with you. On the island there are no cars, so from the Holbox pier to your accommodation you go on foot or by golf cart. Keep that in mind if you have large suitcases or small children with you.

What if my flight lands in Cancun at night?

Flight tracking and free waiting cover a delayed plane, and the transfer is arranged for the time you actually land. What is outside our control is the boat timetable: check how late it runs that night, because it may make more sense to sleep in Chiquila and cross in the morning.

How do I arrange the return to the airport from Chiquila?

By booking the round trip. Your driver picks you up at the port at the agreed time, once you are back from the island, and the price is closed in the same way as the outbound leg. Choose that time allowing for the boat you will take from Holbox and the margin you want before your flight.

Can I get an Uber from the airport?

No. Uber cannot pick up inside Cancun Airport: the airport's ground transport concession belongs to the authorised taxis, and taking an Uber would mean walking out of the grounds to the highway, which makes no sense with luggage. And beyond Cancun and Playa del Carmen the service is patchy where it exists at all, so counting on it for a transfer with luggage and a time to keep is a gamble.

Where is the official taxi rank at the airport?

As you come out of arrivals you will find the Caribbean Taxi desks, the company that holds the airport concession: you follow the yellow signs and pay the zone fare there. It is a legitimate option, but it means queuing with your bags at the end of a flight and not knowing the amount until that moment. What is not worth doing is taking up an offer from anyone approaching you at the exit with no uniform and no desk. Booking ahead skips the queue: the price is fixed and the driver waits with a sign in your name.

Where exactly do you drop us?

The transfer ends at the Chiquilá boat pier, where the car parks by the port are too. Once across, the island has the town of Holbox, Punta Cocos, Punta Mosquito and Isla Pájaros. The boat is separate. Give us the address or the name of your accommodation when you book and the driver takes you to the door.

How it works

From the plane to the hotel, without a single queue

What actually happens from the moment the aircraft doors open.

1
Official meeting point inside the terminal

You book and the confirmation arrives

Pick your destination and vehicle, and within minutes your confirmation is in your inbox with the exact meeting point.

2
Uniformed and identified Smile & Go staff

We wait for you inside the terminal

A uniformed representative waits as you clear customs, holding a sign with your name. Nobody to look for, no stepping outside to haggle.

3
Direct arrival at the hotel entrance

Straight to your hotel door

No stops, nobody else to collect, no detours. You arrive at your hotel entrance, not at a nearby point.

The difference

The three questions we are always asked

Why private instead of a shared shuttle?

A shared shuttle makes several stops before yours: 45 to 90 extra minutes after a long flight. Here the vehicle leaves with you and does not stop until your hotel.

Are you allowed inside the airport?

Yes. We hold an official permit to operate inside CUN and TQO, which is why we can meet you inside the terminal with your name on a sign instead of arranging to meet outside.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight number you give us and move the pick-up ourselves. The waiting is not charged: the delay is not your fault.
