Playa Mujeres and who goes there

Playa Mujeres is not a town or an avenue of hotels: it is a set of large properties, spaced apart, each with its own beach and its own entrance, on a stretch of coast north of Cancun surrounded by mangrove. There is no commercial strip joining them and no street life around, and that is exactly why people choose it. Anyone after bars on the sidewalk stays in the Hotel Zone; you come here for something else.

Because of the kind of stay, the transfer is different too. Many arrive on honeymoon, for a wedding, or with small children and a week or more booked, carrying heavy luggage and hoping not to move again until departure. A private vehicle that leaves when the flight lands and drives straight into the resort solves the one awkward leg of the trip, which happens to be the first one.

Gated entrances: what we need to know

The properties in Playa Mujeres have controlled access: a security gate at the start of the private road, where the vehicle is logged and the guard confirms there is a reservation under the guest name. It is not a complicated step, but the details do have to match, which is why we ask for the exact name of the resort when you book, exactly as it appears on your hotel confirmation.

With that information the driver goes all the way to the lobby and leaves you there with the luggage, which is where hotel check in starts. If the booking is under another person in your group, say so when you book so the name we give at the gate is the right one. And if you are heading to a condominium or a private villa rather than a resort, add the unit number: internal entrances do not sort themselves out.

Night flights, children and the return

Plenty of flights into Cancun land at the end of the day, and at that hour Playa Mujeres is a dark road with entrances that are barely signposted. We track your flight with the number you give us when booking, so the driver is there when you come out whether or not you landed late; waiting is not charged. If you travel with babies or small children, request the seats with the booking and tell us the ages, and they are fitted from the airport.

For the way back, a round trip is worth it. The area is set apart and it is not a matter of walking out to the avenue to flag a taxi: there is no avenue here. With a round trip the pickup time is agreed from your flight and the driver comes to the resort lobby. Are Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres the same place?

They are neighbouring areas on the same stretch of coast north of Cancun, but they are not the same and each has its own fare in our service. To get it right, check the area name on your hotel confirmation and select that one when booking; if in doubt, write to us with the resort name.

Does the driver go into the resort or leave me at the gate?

He goes in. The vehicle is logged at the security gate with the guest name and the resort name, and the driver continues to the lobby, where he leaves you with your luggage. That is why we ask for the exact resort name when you book, as it appears on your confirmation.

Are there taxis back to the airport from Playa Mujeres?

The area sits apart from the city and there is no avenue where you can flag a passing taxi; the usual route is asking the hotel and waiting. That is why a round trip makes sense here: the return is paid for, with an agreed time and pickup at the resort lobby itself.

Do you provide child seats at no extra cost?

Yes, child seats are not charged separately. You only need to request them when booking and tell us the age of each child, so the driver brings the right type already fitted when you walk out of the terminal. It is a common request on this route, which carries many families.

How many people fit in a transfer at this price?

The published price is for the private vehicle for groups of 1 to 8 passengers with their luggage. If you are more, or if you carry bulky items such as golf clubs or diving gear, say so when booking and we assign a suitable vehicle at the matching price.

Can I get an Uber from the airport?

No. Uber cannot pick up inside Cancun Airport: the airport's ground transport concession belongs to the authorised taxis, and taking an Uber would mean walking out of the grounds to the highway, which makes no sense with luggage. And beyond Cancun and Playa del Carmen the service is patchy where it exists at all, so counting on it for a transfer with luggage and a time to keep is a gamble.

Where is the official taxi rank at the airport?

As you come out of arrivals you will find the Caribbean Taxi desks, the company that holds the airport concession: you follow the yellow signs and pay the zone fare there. It is a legitimate option, but it means queuing with your bags at the end of a flight and not knowing the amount until that moment. What is not worth doing is taking up an offer from anyone approaching you at the exit with no uniform and no desk. Booking ahead skips the queue: the price is fixed and the driver waits with a sign in your name.

Where exactly do you drop us?

Playa Mujeres is the beachfront all-inclusive resorts, the marina, the golf course and the residences around it. You go up the Punta Sam road, and several entrances are private with a gatehouse. Give us the address or the name of your accommodation when you book and the driver takes you to the door.
